As Business Controller for the Cost Centre of Expertise (COE) you are a specialist and member of the global Centre of Expertise (CoE). In this role you are responsible for forecasting and reporting on all direct costs for Elsevier (printing, distribution, royalties, content creation, etc.). You support the Finance Director of the Centre of Excellence and work closely with the Elsevier Business Decision Support teams within the journal producing businesses to accurately and effectively forecast cost, report actual outturn, and provide commentary on trends, variances, and opportunities for cost optimization. You will also continually evaluate the policies and processes used, and highlight areas for improvement and standardization across the business. Upon request you produce ad hoc reporting and provide input for business cases and scenario modelling.

You contribute to a strong service oriented culture to build and maintain the reputation of the Centre of Expertise.

The position is based in Amsterdam and reports to the Finance Director (FD) CoE Costs.

Your responsibilities

  • Management reporting: Prepare BU monthlymanagement financial reports and presentations: collect data, addcommentaries/insights, distribute report and adjust according to feedback.Analyse costs and identify opportunities for efficiencies. Respond to ad-hocrequests for analytics and insights into financial information.

  • Planning, budgeting and forecasting: Plan,Budget, Reforecasts, Latest View:prepare and load detail analysis of costs andload adjustments to HFM after BU review. Review and provide insights andinitial commentary on variance analysis on actual/budget/forecast.

  • Financial Accounting: Accounting review andvariance analysis to preserve integrity of accruals and actuals. Review bothOracle and HFM postings at month end and submit correcting entries.

  • Business Modelling: Develop and maintainbusiness case models. Provide financial inputs for business case and populatestandard templates. Provide inputs for analysis of strategic/operationalinitiatives.

  • Internal Control: Establish and executeinternal control policies relating to finance: collate proof of controlsexecuted/compliance. Ensure solid internal control environment across area ofresponsibility. Assist with internal control reviews. Follow internal controlsand procedures to comply data integrity and consistency.

What you should bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accountingor a related field required; MBA or advanced business degree desirable

  • Minimum 7 years relevant experience in a financial controller or senioranalyst role required and solid experience working in a global organization infinance.

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of financial and management accounting,process and systems.

  • Affinity with large and complex international working environment.

  • Commercial and organizational awareness, ideally in a comparable industry.

  • Must be an advanced level Excel user.Experience with manipulating large amounts of data and PowerPoint,Hyperion, and Oracle knowledge are required as well as the ability to quicklylearn new systems/tools.

  • Financial skills: good understanding of managementinformation needs, financial reporting and accounting standards.

  • Business skills: robust knowledge of finance life cycle and businessprocesses.

  • System knowledge: Excel (advanced level), PowerPoint, Word, Hyperion, Oracle.

  • Strong communication skills in English (spoken and written).
