As Global Head of R2R you will drive the R2R organisation to consistent, ‘best in class’ performance providing trusted financial insight in a robustly controlled, 'no surprises' environment.

The R2R team is responsible for the integrity of Elsevier's financial information, generating accurate and timely monthly results for all global entities. Working though teams in the US, Netherlands and AsiaPac region (including a significant Finance Accounting Hub in the Philippines), the Global Head will implement change where necessary, refining controls around the monthly financial close (and account reconciliation processes), ensuring that financial exposures and/or trends are rapidly identified and appropriately communicated and enhancing the R2R team's influence over resulting business actions and decisions.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate that he/she has been a 'thought leader' in the R2R space as well as an exceptional people leader who has developed cohesive and effective global teams. The successful candidate will be able to identify opportunities for further performance enhancement through standardisation/streamlining of processes, leveraging both a global Oracle accounting platform and experienced teams situated across all time zones.

This is a key role in the Elsevier Finance organisation, with significant exposure to senior management across the business. As such, we are looking for a candidate who can rapidly bring his/her domain knowledge and leadership skills to bear and who is an excellent communicator, able to assess and simplify key issues and to support and advise senior management accordingly.

The Global Head of R2R is operationally responsible for a team of 80 FTEs (5 direct reports) located primarily in St Louis, Amsterdam, Singapore and Manila. The successful candidate will also be required to lead the R2R team in proactively supporting significant business developments, including integration of acquisitions into the global Finance framework and involvement in strategic product and system developments.

This role is based in Amsterdam and will report to the Global Head, GFS Operations.

Your responsibilities

Leadership

  • As leader of the R2R team globally you set the 'tone from the top', leading, motivating and developing the team and acting as a trusted partner to the CFO, Group Finance and the business unit FDs.

  • Maintaining a culture of accounting excellence and ensuring the integrity of Elsevier's underlying financial information.

  • Interpreting financial performance, risks and exposures and able to develop strong analytical and business control capabilities across the team.

  • Develop a strong mentoring and coaching culture in the team, with a 'can do' attitude that challenges the status quo and takes full ownership of issues and actions.

Process excellence

  • Own and promote all relevant R2R policies and operating procedures

  • Ensuring full compliance with accounting standards and all relevant regulatory and control requirements, including SOX

  • Enhance the team's understanding of the Elsevier business environment and deliver a 'no surprises' control and reporting culture

  • Consistently manage performance towards a standardised/streamlined global framework and ensure all exceptions are identified and reported within a transparent control environment

  • Motivate the team to identify and implement process enhancements as part of business as usual

  • Deliver accurate/timely monthly, quarterly and annual results and refine the team's analytical skillset (assuring the reasonableness of all outputs via rigorous review procedures etc)

Change management

  • Act as 'thought leader' on all projects and initiatives impacting R2R

  • Identify and consistently drive process efficiencies across the global team

  • Working with all key stakeholders, plan and implement improvements in targeted areas, including further automation of account reconciliation processes and centralising teams with common objectives (e.g. end to end cash management)

  • Strengthen quality control procedures across the team and leverage a consistent methodology for integrating stand-alone businesses and acquisitions onto the global Oracle platform

Customer Service

  • Ensure that the team fully ''owns'' all issues it deals with and is a trusted participant in the commercial decision-making process

  • Build strong and effective relationships between the R2R team and all levels of the business (including other Finance teams), and maintain an extensive internal (eg with business unit FDs) and external network in order to stay ahead of likely business and financial reporting requirements

People Development

  • Inspire and motivate those in the R2R team to be fully committed to the achievement of the R2R global objectives moving forward

  • Develop a team that is empowered to drive change and demonstrates ownership and a deep understanding of the issues and actions it is managing

  • Motivate through high quality performance management including 1:1 coaching and sharing best practices, methodologies and new insights and drive this throughout the R2R management structure

What you should bring

  • 10+ years’ experience of which 7 years in a Senior Management role in an international Accounting environment and working on multiple systems.

  • Accounting background (CPA)

  • Extended knowledge in IFRS, R2R, clear finance system knowledge and advanced end to end knowledge of processes and project management.

  • Prior people management experience in a Multinational environment is essential.

  • Knowledge of SOX compliance is very desirable.

  • Strong leader with clear vision, advanced analytical skills.

  • Self-starter who challenges the status quo and initiates and leads change

  • Ability to understand, set and influence strategic plans and visions, identify threats and opportunities.

  • Good political awareness and an excellent communicator at all levels of seniority. Allocate resources where the benefit for Elsevier is the highest.

  • Must possess strong sense of ownership while at the same time delegating tasks towards direct reports.

  • Up to date with industry and professional changes and market trends, as well as country trends incl boycott and other governmental regulations.

  • Fluency in English
