Focus of the position

Responsible for developing the strategy to develop and grow Elsevier’s presence in the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, and Medical Devices (PBT) industries in the Mature Europe (MAEU) region. Set overall strategy and tactical plans to achieve sales success as well as customer satisfaction in accordance to overall Research Solution Sales (RSS) sales plan and MAEU Sales Director. Has revenue, cost management, and sales development responsibility for the sales team in the given industry in this region as well as leadership responsibility to develop industry recognition, thought leadership with customers, and sustainable competitive advantage.

This role reports directly to MAEU Sales Director and needs to be based in Amsterdam, London or Germany.

Working together

This role has line responsibility and manages an Account Management sales team. The team works with a good team spirit, collaborates and likes to keep each other sharp. You will work in a matrixed sales environment with the MAEU Sales Director and other Regional Sales Managers. Liaise on strategic and operational activities, with Business Development, PBT strategy, and other sales managers.

Your responsibilities

  • Develop and execute sales strategy and planning for revenue and forecast in MAEU.

  • Listen and manage customer preferences to determine focus of sales efforts

  • Responsible for advising and collaborating on differentiated approach, solution packaging, and pricing models for industries with segment team

  • Liaises directly with influential Key Opinion Leaders, industry associations, and channel partners in the region

  • Implement standard sales operational compliance to CRM usage, call reporting, and sales development activities

  • Support and lead negotiation in critical deals

  • Act as an escalation point for customer satisfaction concerns

  • Provide monthly reports documenting sales results, forecasts, and alarming trends for the remainder of the year

  • Conduct regular sales planning meetings and telephone conferences to review sales activity, sales results and other related issues

  • Responsible for a regional revenue budget and monitors cost budget

  • Deliver current regional growth of a determined % per 1 and 3 years

  • Build and maintain relationships with customers’ key decision makers especially for high revenue and/ or strategic accounts

  • Improve customer satisfaction and reference ability

  • Identify networks of key opinion leaders and integrate appropriate Elsevier resources

  • Manage Account Managers as direct reports and manage relationship with other sales people in the RSS extended sales team.

  • Drive and monitor the organizational objectives for the account teams

  • Observe and identify new areas for sales efficiency and effectiveness

  • Deploy and develop sales resources to deploy and achieve sales strategy

  • Responsible for coordinating and integrating crucial sales activities with appropriate segment team initiatives

What you should bring

  • Proven sales track record of 10 + years in Pharma and Biotech markets and sales management in international context

  • Bachelor’s Degree level plus MBA required (or currently enrolled in an MBA program)

  • Deep knowledge of PBT value chain and demonstrable evidence of thought leadership in the domain (e.g. conference presence, authoring, research practitioner)

  • Strong conceptual skills to drive roll out and adoption of new products and new sales methodology

  • People management and development skills to coach and mentor with a multi-cultural awareness

  • Strong communication (verbal and written), presentation, and negotiation skills

  • Competent (business level) in English and one other European language
