Dow Chemical Campus Internship – Molecular-structure-based modeling of diffusion of small molecules and oligomers in polymers in Zeeland, Netherlands
The Dow Chemical Company is offering great business career opportunities in a global and international environment. We are looking for an ambitious Student (m/f) supporting our business who is interested in doing an Internship onMolecular Structure Based Modeling (diffusion of small molecules and oligomers in polymers)
Dow is a leading manufacturer of polymers for various applications. In many cases, product performance is related to the migration of foreign substances (additives or contaminants) from the polymer into the surrounding material. Food packaging is a good example: public health regulations put restrictions on the migration of additives from the package into the food, while product quality and shelf life requirements determine the allowed transmission rates of water and oxygen through the package. Migration plays an important role in several other application areas of Dow polymers. Besides its practical relevance, it is also a very interesting and challenging topic from a scientific point of view. The physical mechanisms involved in migration are diffusion and transport across interfaces. This project focuses on diffusion. The objective is to gain fundamental understanding of the relation between the diffusion coefficient and the molecular structure of the diffusing substance. In the first phase of the project, the goal is to validate an existing model for diffusion of small molecules. In the second phase, the goal is to extend this model to make it applicable also to oligomers (because these are often used as additives in polymers). The modeling work will involve the free volume theory of diffusion, group contribution methods, and the Flory-Huggins theory for polymer mixtures. Candidates for this position need not be familiar with all of these subjects, but must have a strong interest in theory and modeling and be willing to expand their knowledge in this area.
You can start preferably in January 2018 for a period of 5-12 months (exact timing to be discussed). You will be remunerated.
You are studying for a Masters degree.
The ideal candidates are scientists or engineers from a multitude of technical disciplines with a focus on materials science, chemistry, biotechnology, chemical engineering and microbiology.
Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong initiative and open to working in a diverse environment with colleagues from around the world.
Fluency in English is essential, other languages are a plus (especially Dutch).
