We have an exciting opportunity to lead the way in Analytics for our Research Products.
Researchers seek a digital environment where ideas can be exchanged, examined, and applied with tools that empower scientific, medical and technical knowledge. Elsevier’s research platforms allow them to find and analyse data from over 5,000 publishers via Scopus; access the leading ebooks and journal articles published by Elsevier on ScienceDirect; and manage their research and showcase your profile via free services on Mendeley. These platforms make data and content easier to search, access, analyze, and share.
Research Products Web Analytics is a specialized and centralized team that collaborates with strategy, product, technology, marketing and sales to drive data-driven decision-making at Elsevier. The team comprises 25 to 30 analysts, based across several locations in Europe.
Analytics is a key growth driver for Elsevier, allowing measurement of researcher engagement at different stages in the research workflow. The team analyses data generated by user interaction with platforms like ScienceDirect at http://www.sciencedirect.com/ , Scopus at https://www.scopus.com/ and Mendeley at https://www.mendeley.com/ . Westrive to make data available to all teams, by carefully picking the right product metrics, and orchestrating Web tracking and creating powerful dashboards. We use statistical analyses to provide insight for product development and marketing. We strive to continuously improve the products by building AB tests or other types of experiments with the product managers, engineers and designers.
With already a substantial analytics team, we are looking to bring an experienced digital analytics leader to further support and lead the team to deliver not only insights but actual improvement in our product metrics, to support the growth of your products and achieve our targets. You will lead a large team split across London and Amsterdam, and a few other locations (home-based analysts). You will be responsible for setting up appropriate plans to continuously develop the analytical, technical expertise and communication skills of the analysts. The role reports to the SVP Web Analytics based in London. You can either be based in Amsterdam or in London.
Product Analytics Team Management
Set and manage the Product Analytics team priorities annually, quarterly and monthly in order to hit our annual targets and best use the time and talent of the analytics team
Metrics definition and target setting, in collaboration with Product stakeholders and Strategy
Lead the creation of clear, robust and thought-provoking analytics reviews, and ensure that they are followed by actions
Coach your team to work with product teams to help define the correct questions to get under the skin of product performance
Build rapidly a deep understanding of our Research Products Web Analytics for researchers platforms, and secondary publishing platforms (all 14 digital products in total) and their objectives to strengthen our data-driven optimization practices.
Develop the team to an expert level of digital product analytics, building specific training programs depending on their current skillset
Senior management reporting, KPI target setting for Research management team
Responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of product metrics to CEO, senior management team and holding company (RELX), together with timely delivery of critical insights into the movements of such metrics
Responsible for orchestrating the setting of top-level targets for the KPIs for the Research Product management team, ahead of each calendar year
Strive to automate regular reporting, with the support of our Technical Analytics team, freeing up time and resources for analytic “deep dives”
Customer and Sales usage reporting and COUNTER compliance
Responsible for the timely delivery of monthly reports to Customers and Sales
Responsible for the compliance of such reports with the COUNTER code of practice, setting the standards in the scientific publishing industry
Drive the adoption of data-driven practices
Play an instrumental role in the adoption of Web Analytics tool across the whole Research Products team, including planning and delivering training to product
Champion data-driven iterative product management across the Research Product team
Never settle for unfounded conclusions, champion sound statistical methods of analysis
In partnership with the wider Analytics team, help deliver “best in class” analytical capabilities across the Research Products and the wider company,, including the use of new statistical methods, techniques, tools and systems
In order to deliver your results, you will partner with the other teams which comprise the wider Web Analytics team (Data Science, Product management, Market Intelligence), and our partner team in Technology who supports our analytics platforms (based in the US).
Our ideal candidate has a background in mathematics, statistics or a scientific field requiring applied mathematics. With a track record of developing and leading a large team , across several locations, and under demanding timelines, you will demonstrate a relentless focus on aiming high and delivering amazing results. You are business savvy, highly analytical, resourceful, and can communicate complex ideas with ease. You enjoy shifting from detailed discussions on statistical questions to high-level strategic questions, while leading a team to deliver several priorities in parallel.Expect at least travel every other week for one to two days to Amsterdam (or London if based in Amsterdam). Once or twice a year, travel to the US to work with our engineering colleagues, or attend company internal conferences.
What you should bring
Proven success leading teams within a large, complex international matrix environment, under very demanding timelines and proven experience managing a large team (> 20 team members) across several locations
Proven experience managing high-level strategic questions while also diving into the details of specific analyses
Strong planning and project management skills including a demonstrated ability to organise a team to work to deadlines and juggle multiple projects, under pressure
PhD or B.S. in applied math, statistics, physics, or other quantitative field requiring applied mathematics. Degree from a top-tier university, minimum 2:1 (numerical) or equivalent degree for non-UK universities
Significant experience in digital analytics, or business intelligence and strong ability to analyze data or reports to articulate the "so what" to the business owner or leadership
Proven experience of measurement and data-driven optimization of B2C digital platforms
Strong understanding of what data points can be collected and analysed in a digital environment, and how each data point should be analysed
Proficiency with systems such as SQL, Tableau, SiteCatalyst, Google Analytics tools, Python, and ‘R’
Excellent at presenting data in a visually engaging and insightful manner
Ability to work in a very fast-paced, ever-changing environment, where prioritizing is necessary
Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
