Philips Research Bio-physicist in Eindhoven, Netherlands

The role will involve working in a team researching opportunities in the general area of Personal Care, in particular involving measurements of skin and hair properties and the effect of treatment with devices. Both experimental and theoretical approaches will be required, working in multidisciplinary teams with skin biologists and data scientists. The aim is to identify and prove the feasibility of novel technologies that will lead to new products and/or services used by consumers at home.

Candidate should be a PhD Physicist with a bio-physics background or interests.

You are responsible for

  • Carrying out scientific research and technology exploration with the aim of developing new products and services that make meaningful improvements in the life of users, both in their appearance and health.

  • Creating value by delivering these innovations to the business and creating Intellectual Property (IP)

  • Collaborating closely in multidisciplinary teams (in particular physics, physiology and data science) and with our business partners to efficiently and effectively bring innovations to the users

  • Contributing to the innovation strategies and roadmaps together with management and the business, in particular by identifying new technologies and its applications

  • Building new competencies or extending existing ones that have potential to contribute significant value to the business

  • Representing Philips (Research) internally on one or more competency domains

The Personal Care and Wellness Department of Philips Research consists of physicists, bio-medical engineers and data scientists. This team is responsible for the identification and development of new technologies for products and services for the Personal Care business. For example, consumer intense pulsed light (IPL) photoepilation was invented here. We work on not only male grooming and female beauty products, but also digital personal lifestyle, wellness and health propositions. We have extensive facilities to enable this – physics/laser laboratories, bio-laboratories and a data science infrastructure. The focus of the department is on skin and hair, how to measure, quantify and improve its health and appearance, as well as using the skin as a window on systemic health, all of which is based on a deep and integrated understanding of physics, physiology and data science.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

  • A PhD in physics, preferably bio-physics or biomedical engineering.

  • A proven track record in scientific research with a creative, practical and experimental approach.

  • Experience with optics and lasers is an advantage.

  • Prior knowledge of skin science is helpful but not required – domain specific training and opportunities for learning will be given.

  • An affinity with digital technologies

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong personal relationships at all levels

  • Curious, proactive, fast learner able to quickly pick up new areas

  • Fluently in English
